I am currently a Professor of Chemistry in the Centre for Chemical Sciences, School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Plymouth. I obtained my BSc in Chemistry from the University of York, U.K. in 1985 and my DPhil from the same university in 1988 (Professor Robin Perutz) receiving the Kathleen Mary Stott award. Following post-doctoral terms as an SERC/NATO Fellow at the Universities of California, U.S.A. and Ottawa, Canada, I returned to the U.K. in September 1993 and took up the position of Lecturer in Environmental Chemistry at the University of Plymouth. I was appointed to Senior Lecturer in September 1997, to Principal Lecturer in September 1999 and to Professor in September 2005.
My research interests focus on applications of environmental organic chemistry and chemical education. For the former, I am currently using a multi-proxy approach to reconstruct polar sea ice records for the Holocene period. This work is funded by the NERC in the UK, and I am also a member of the ArcticNet and CFL projects which are based in Canada. In 1996, I was a recipient of a RSC JWT Jones Travelling Fellowship to Ottawa, Canada and, in 2001, I received a further fellowship to visit the University of Nantes, France. In 2003, I received the Higher Education Teaching Award from the Royal Society of Chemistry and was given the Chemical Synthesis Services award for teaching in 2005. In 2007, I was awarded a BA Media Fellowship, spending time with BBC Horizon and the Royal Society and writing articles ("Nano Stores the Planet", "Public Perspectives on Research" and "Watery Secrets") at the BA Festival of Science meeting at the University of York. I was awarded a National Teaching Fellowship by the Higher Education Academy in 2010.
I have received grants from The Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), The Royal Society, The European Social Fund, The Higher Education Academy, The British Council, The LGC, HEFCE, SERC, The Seale Hayne Educational Trust and The University of Plymouth.
I am a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and of the Higher Education Academy, and a member of the NERC Peer Review College (2008-2011), the Royal Society of Chemistry Tertiary Education Group Committee and the Advisory Group for the HEA Physical Sciences Subject Centre.
I use a Context/Problem Based Learning (C/PBL) approach to my teaching which covers mainly organic chemistry, NMR spectroscopy and laboratory work. I have received awards from various funding bodies (HEA, RSC, Royal Society) to develop these areas further and, in collaboration with Professor Tina Overton (Director of the HEA Physical Sciences Subject Centre), I have written a series of context-based case studies for analytical and core chemistry. I have also co-written mathematics packages for chemists with Dr Robin Horan and Dr Martin Lavelle (School of Maths and Statistics, University of Plymouth) and I have developed PBL laboratory work for undergraduates and for schools. I am currently working on a project funded under the Chemistry For Our Future program (RSC/HEFCE) investigating the effectiveness of C/PBL in undergraduate chemistry courses.
My refereed publications since 2000 are listed below (reverse chronological) and my 'My Citations' page from Google Scholar provides additional bibliographic metrics. See also my ORCID number
